Mostafa Khoshcheshm, a Tehran-based Iran affairs analyst and professor at Fars Media Faculty, says he expects only tactical changes, and not strategic ones, when it comes to Iran’s foreign policy under a Pezeshkian presidency.

“Iran’s foreign policy is decided by the entire establishment, mostly at the Supreme National Security Council, where [there are] representatives of the government as well as the armed forces, the Iranian supreme leader and the parliament,” he told Al Jazeera.

“Since the government is the executive body, it has the largest share [of representatives]. So, basically, we could say that strategically speaking, Iran’s foreign policy will remain the same, but tactically, it could be different. The direction is the same, but the pace would be different.”

This would be more the case if former United States President Donald Trump wins his country’s election in November, Khoshcheshm said.

“If Donald Trump comes into office, I don’t really expect any kind of change, any talks between the two sides, or any change in the present course of actions,” he added.
